We are committed to supporting patients with safe, evidence-based weight management options in line with NHS England guidance and local Integrated Care Board (ICB) pathways.

The following support may be offered depending on eligibility and clinical need.

๐ป NHS Weight Management Programmes
Eligible patients may be referred to:
๐ Tier 2 Weight Management Services via โChoose Youโ (patients can self-refer)
๐ Digital Weight Management Programmes
๐ NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme
๐ Specialist dietetic support where appropriate
๐ Eligibility for Weight Management Referral
Patients may be considered for referral if they:
โ Have a BMI of 30 or above
OR
โ Have a BMI of 27.5 or above if from:
- South Asian backgrounds
- Chinese backgrounds
- Other Asian backgrounds
- Middle Eastern backgrounds
- Black African backgrounds
- African-Caribbean backgrounds
โ Meet any additional clinical criteria assessed by the reviewing clinician.
An up-to-date BMI is required before referral can be considered.
๐ Pharmacological Weight Loss Options
In some circumstances, medication may be considered alongside behavioural and lifestyle support.
Weight loss medication is only prescribed where patients meet NHS eligibility criteria and where it is clinically safe and appropriate.
Tirzepatide (Mounjaroยฎ)
โ NHS Tirzepatide (Mounjaroยฎ) Eligibility
Patients may ONLY be eligible for NHS Tirzepatide (Mounjaroยฎ) if they have:
โ A BMI of 35 or above
OR
โ A BMI of 32.5 or above if from:
- Asian backgrounds
- Middle Eastern backgrounds
- Black African backgrounds
- African-Caribbean backgrounds
AND
โ At least 4 out of the following 5 qualifying health conditions:
1๏ธโฃ Established cardiovascular disease (heart or blood vessel disease)
2๏ธโฃ High blood pressure requiring treatment
3๏ธโฃ Cholesterol problems requiring treatment or abnormal cholesterol blood results
4๏ธโฃ Obstructive sleep apnoea confirmed by a sleep clinic requiring CPAP
5๏ธโฃ Type 2 diabetes mellitus
๐ Behavioural Support Programme (BSOP)
Patients prescribed Tirzepatide (Mounjaroยฎ) MUST also participate in:
โ The Healthier You: NHS Behavioural Support for Obesity Prescribing (BSOP)
This is a structured 9-month programme which may include:
๐ Digital support
๐ Remote support
๐ Face-to-face support
โ If a patient declines or does not engage with the BSOP programme, prescribing may be stopped.
โ Ongoing Review and Monitoring
Patients receiving Tirzepatide (Mounjaroยฎ) will require:
๐ฉบ Regular clinical reviews
๐ Weight monitoring
๐ Medication monitoring
๐ Participation in behavioural support
Treatment may be stopped if:
โ Less than 5% of starting body weight has been lost after 6 months on the highest tolerated dose
โ The behavioural support programme is not completed or engaged with
โ There are concerns regarding medication safety or side effects
โ Important Information About Weight Loss Medication
Weight loss medication:
โ Is not suitable for everyone
โ Requires clinical assessment and ongoing monitoring
โ Must be used alongside behavioural and lifestyle support
โ May not be immediately available due to NHS eligibility criteria and local commissioning arrangements
Patients requesting medication may require:

๐ Updated weight/BMI measurements
๐ Medication reviews
๐ Assessment of existing medical conditions
๐ข Important Notice
Please do not submit repeated requests for weight loss injections if you do not currently meet NHS eligibility criteria.
All requests are reviewed individually in line with:
โ NHS England guidance
โ Local ICB pathways
โ Clinical safety requirements
โ Available practice capacity
โ Meeting the criteria does not automatically guarantee NHS prescribing.
Capacity within NHS services may affect waiting times and availability.
Patients who are not eligible for medication may still benefit from lifestyle and behavioural support services.
