What to do with old medicines

Take it to the pharmacy you got it from or bring it in to the surgery. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.

About pharmacists

As qualified healthcare professionals, pharmacists can offer advice on minor illnesses such as:

  • coughs
  • colds
  • sore throats
  • tummy trouble
  • aches and pains

They can also advise on medicine that you can buy without a prescription.

Find a pharmacy

Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.

Most pharmacies have a private room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff.

Patient Notice: Easier Access to Your Oral Contraceptive (OC) Pill

You no longer need to request a repeat prescription from the GP for your oral contraceptive pill.

If you’re already taking the pill, have not had any problems or changes with your contraception, and your prescription is due for renewal, you can now get your ongoing supply directly from your local community pharmacy through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service.

Your pharmacist will offer a quick confidential consultation to check your blood pressure (if needed), ask about any side effects, and safely issue your supply — all without needing an appointment at the GP surgery.

For certain groups of people, your local pharmacist can also initiate the oral contraceptive pill.

Why this change?

Easier and faster access — many pharmacies are open evenings and weekends – Free NHS service – Helps free up GP appointments for more complex care – Supports patient choice and convenience.

Next steps: Visit your local participating pharmacy (you can search www.nhs.uk to find one near you) – Bring any packaging or recent information about your current pill – Your GP record will be updated automatically to ensure continuity of care.
